A Portrait of the Artist\'s Mother, Arrangement in Black and Gray, No. 2
This is a portrait of my mom created from color samples of James McNeill Whistler's portrait of his mother. His painting incorporated large areas of flat color as a precursor to Modernist abstraction, and this painting is an homage to him being flat shape and color of quarter inch widths. The design is a double image; It is of three dimensional squares and rectangles, yet it is also an eight-sided star pattern derived from a quilt that my mom made.
